Suzanne Hollander—an associate teaching professor at the FIU School of Business’s Tibor and Sheila Hollo School of Real Estate and program director of professional development for the Office to Advance Women Equity & Diversity —is an honoree for the first annual South Florida Business & Wealth (SFBW) Prestigious Women Awards.
The program honors the finest female professionals in South Florida and recognizes top leaders in the tri-county area who have created business success stories and provided leadership to women and the broader community. Hollander is being recognized in the education category for her work in providing practical real estate education.
Hollander was surprised and thrilled by the award, and is honored to be representing FIU amongst the honorees. She feels that the award serves a deeper purpose.
“For many of my students, I’m the only woman professor they have in real estate or the only woman lawyer they’ve ever met,” Hollander says. Awards are not meant to be put on the mantle. They’re meant to be put to work. When I’m recognized, it shows other women that careers in real estate, finance and law are possible.â€
Hollander has worked as a real estate attorney, speaker, professor and been a voice for property rights, real estate investment, housing and infrastructure development for 20 years. She graduated from Dartmouth College and was awarded the Soia Mentschikoff Scholarship, a full-tuition academic scholarship, at the University of Miami Law School. Mentschikoff was the first woman dean of the University of Miami Law School, which demonstrated to Hollander as a law student that, even in a male-dominated area, it was possible for women to achieve great heights and recognition.
Hollander came to academia later in her career. She had worked in large law firms, in a family office for a Swiss investment group as in-house counsel on large assets in downtown Miami, and with investors buying out of foreclosure, when someone suggested that her unique experiences would translate into a great demonstration of practical application in the classroom.
One of her favorite aspects of teaching is seeing the success of students over the years.
“I’ve been at FIU for just over a decade and have taught over 3,000 students. It’s gratifying to hear them say that with the knowledge I’ve taught them,” she says. “They’ve been able to improve credit, help their parents buy a house or begin a fulfilling career.â€
This recognition follows several honors for Hollander. In 2019, Globestreet recognized her as a National Woman of Influence in Commercial Real Estate, Mentor Category and, in 2018, the Commercial Real Estate Women Network, a group of more than 11,000 global professionals, awarded Suzanne its Global Career Advancement for Women Award. FIU awarded Suzanne the Landon Innovative Educator Award in recognition and support of her innovative use of technology with real estate.
The United States State Department has appointed Hollander to its Fulbright Specialist Roster as an expert in real estate. She routinely teaches real estate, property rights, housing and the importance of transparent legal systems and private property to democracy in Latin America as an invited attorney expert to universities, public organizations and private industry.
Nationally, Hollander authors the blog Professor Real Estate®, providing real estate education to the nation.
